Sharona is the co-owner of Wood Shed Lumber & Hardware Supply with five locations serving rural communities in western Missouri. She and her husband Cecil bought a lumberyard in 2016 before relocating to a ground-up retail home improvement store and full-service lumberyard in 2020. They added a full-service rental business and two new locations in 2021. Since then, she’s worked tirelessly to bring a unique flavor and expanded offerings at each store. She finds joy in providing caring, effective solutions and helping customers take pride in accomplishing any size project. Sharona looks forward to listening and learning from her fellow board members and representing the entire membership, especially those in small communities. “As entrepreneurs, we have the freedom to make our own decisions,” she says. “I’ve experienced a lot in a short time, and I want to use my voice to help other independents remain strong, stay relevant, and achieve growth.”

Sharona hopes her children may one day continue their parents’ home improvement legacy. “People often wonder about my crazy life—keeping up with four kids, operating five stores, raising cattle, hosting an exchange student this year, and running a fireworks stand each summer. It’s a lot of hard work and very little sleep. I don’t call it work because I love it so much and don’t see it as a sacrifice. I’m not good at sitting still. Being productive and using every minute of the day is normal for me and necessary in this business. Above all, I try to find harmony among all my roles, communicate openly, be patient, and celebrate the successes along the way.”

Sharona’s work ethic, drive, and goal-setting mindset are qualities she’s instilled in her kids, who are always invited to join her on the ride. She believes the person at the front register is vital for greeting customers with a smile, offering the best assistance, and thanking them for their business. “You have to care,” she says. “Doing what’s right, helping out, and giving attention is part of the human interaction, which we don’t have enough of today. Engage and enjoy every opportunity to converse with people. We can’t lose that human touch—make the most of your time with others.” When you factor in Sharona’s love of a good challenge and ongoing desire for growth, it’s no surprise Wood Shed has grown from one to five locations in just eight years.
